If you only had access to Daneeeboy.com, you could be forgiven for thinking that Lady GaGa is the only woman recording electro-pop goodness at the moment. Sorry about that.
So here’s a nice alternative from the lovely little town of London. They are a band called The Ultrasonics, an unashamedly electro pop bunch headed up by a bleach blonde lass called Johanna. And they are very good. They sound a little bit like US west coast electro groups Ultraviolet Sound and Stefy (two fantastic bands to sound like, if you’re asking me). They are set to release their debut single, “Perfect Girl” via iTunes and other digital stores this summer.
According to their press release thinger…
“Already championed by the likes of Popjustice (the UK’s number one pop music site) and EQ, ‘Perfect Girl’ is a true electropop gem. The track draws influences from classic ‘80s pop, with a nod towards the synth-laden sounds of The Human League and Depeche Mode.
‘Perfect Girl’ acts as a perfect introduction to the group’s fusion of retro and 21st Century electro.”
Oh right, then. I’ll add a Daneeeboy quote: “They make me feel dirty in a good way. Also the lead singer sounds a bit like a more talented Jenny Frost.“
In all seriousness, I hope The Ultrasonics are a band we will be hearing more from over the coming months. They will be performing alongside Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Alphabeat and Client at Manchester Pride on the 25th Of August, the same day “Perfect Girl” hits digital stores.
Introducing Alex Roots, who is a brand spanking new artist, so new that she is only 15 (15!). But despite being barely into pubity, she is actually quite good, unlike, say… Lil Chris.
Alex has a MySpace, which she has filled with tracks that she is working on her for forthcoming album. Her music is like a melting pot of great pop moments from the past 30 years, with a few obvious influences being Queen, Cyndi Lauper, 80’s Whitney and Blondie, with some Abba style production. How fabulous. The best track is “Don’t Stop Looking”, which I maintain sounds like a Toyah Wilcox track. Also present is “Give It Up” which has smatterings of Whitney’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, the “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”-esque “Put Your Hands Up”, and a gorgeous ballad called “It’s All About Life”.
Shamelessly ripping off Take That, Lily Allen has posted a new song, “Who’d Of Known”, to her MySpace that has been cut from her new album, “Stuck On The Naughty Step”. This is apparently because the chorus is based less that loosely on Take That’s “Shine”. The song is beautiful, electronic, melancholy and simple and makes me very excited about her new album.
Everybody comes to Heidiwood. Atleast, that’s what Spencer and Heidi seem to think. Top of their ridiculous statements this week, in an interview with Extra, they claim they are going to be bigger than the Beckhams. Plus they said: “We’re about to launch our social website. It’s going to be bigger than MySpace, bigger than Facebook.” Facebook must be quaking in their boots.
Lily Allen has posted a new song clip on her MySpace called “GWB”, or “Guess Who, Batman”, or “Get With the Brogram” depending on the time of day. The song is about a racist, hateful, small-minded fascist, who dreams of being like his father and is losing control. G.W.B. Wonder who she’s referring to there?
This one comes to you via PopJustice. The absolutely fucking amazing, I am already addicted like a kid on crack, absurdly talented, VV Brown. Just the other day i was saying there is not enough ‘do wop’ in the charts, she must have been behind me in the que at ‘Bucks because she has answered my prayers.
VV is newly signed to Universal, and will be releasing her debut single, “Crying Blood” later this year. She’s gonna be performing at Glasto next week too (hats off). You can listen to the “Crying Blood” demo, plus a couple of others at her MySpace. ”Crying Blood” is rather amaze, it must be said. Imagine Kate Nash meets 50’s rock’n'roll by way of Gladys Knight. And it bears a striking resemblance to one of the greatest songs ever written - “The Monster Mash” (probably on purpose, not sure on that one).
There’s a dark, Universal horror undertone to her stuff that has surfaced online. The ironic emos will love it. I’m an ironic emo some days. Thus, I love it.
EDIT: Hold the horses! I’ve just found out that VV Brown may well be the Vanessa Brown who had a much underrated hit called “Whipped”? As in the “Whipped” I played on repeat and pissed everyone off with? If it is then the inevitable success that is about the be bestowed upon her is much earned.
Anyway, go to her MySpace. Judge her in that way you do. And listen to “Leave” aswell, which in some ways reminds me of The Shirelle’s “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”.
Some of them are making music and sticking it on MySpace! Lily Allen would be proud. For a while I’ve been keeping my eye on an artist called Fabio Lendrum. He’s 16, doing ‘A’ Levels and ‘bringing you a mix of electro rave pop, with a fresh young London sound. .‘ But unlike most MySpace kids, his stuff is actually kinda amazing.
Fabio’s first track to surface was “Rebel Rebel Go Go”, which sounds a bit like Hadouken!’s “Superstar”, but with more tune and a good dose of Street Fighter charm. The chorus is pounding like a good pill, and it’s the kind of track you can imagine getting off your tits to and then jumping around like a tit! Second track “Little Game” is a bit less grimey, and a bit more 80’s pop, which is all the more fab. And no one gets knifed! What a relief for the Daily Mail.
The two other tracks on his MySpace, “Mum Don’t Like It” and “Don’t Wait For Me” are less ravey and more tears in the rain, and prove that not only can this kid throw together a great tune and MC all over it, he has a unique and warm singing voice. It’s slightly sickening, even his hair is cool.
If not, why not? Ultraviolet Sound are a 3-piece group from LA making dirty electro pop that is beyond fabness. They recently released their album online for free via the handy widget below. The group were formed on the dancefloor, and have an obsession with pop culture and the media (it’s like Daneeeboy.com in musical form!). Their track “Brainwashed” is exceptionally good, dealing with the celebrity culture Perez has been peddling.
Standout track for me is “Texxxt Bomb” which features some guest vocals from everyone’s favourite MySpacer, Jeffree Star, and “O.C.D.” which stands for “Obsessive Compulsive Dancing” is a dancefloor anthem. This is music made for rocking to in dark electro clubs. Check out the tracks below, and check out this interview which talks about their history and sound.
Pop culture can be so dull and drab, but it can also be like an orgasm in an ice cream shop. Daneeeboy is about celebrating the stuff that makes your clit tingle, and not the other stuff. Simon Cowell is not welcome here. If you are Simon Cowell, please fuck off.
I like stuff that is independent. Stuff that speaks for itself. Stuff that makes me want to dance. Stuff that makes me want to cry. Stuff that's cheap and tacky. The glamorous, the dirty, the over the top and the insane.
